Hakone Checkpoint
 
															"Hakone Checkpoint," an important historical site that tells the story of transportation in the Edo period, has reappeared on the shores of Lake Ashi. This checkpoint, restored after about 140 years using the techniques and tools of the time, makes visitors feel as if they have wandered into the Edo period with its imposing presence and its black exterior painted with persimmon tannin and soot ink.

								Isshiki-do Saro and Cafe Pic are recommended dining spots for families with children. At Isshiki-do Saro, you can enjoy sandwiches made with natural and high-quality ingredients, such as a rolled omelet sandwich made with free-range eggs, a fruit and carrot sandwich, and a roast beef sandwich.
The interior is open and comfortable, and for takeout, they also sell rich vanilla and rose soft-serve ice cream. At Cafe Pic, you can enjoy lunch or teatime in a calm atmosphere inside the cafe while enjoying the seasonal scenery from the terrace seats overlooking the fountain of Hakone Gora Park.							
Model Itinerary for a Hakone Family Trip
								We will now introduce a model itinerary for a family trip to Hakone.

Day 1
Morning
- Arrive at Hakone-Yumoto Station.
- Head to Owakudani on the Hakone Ropeway. Enjoy a nature experience while taking in the spectacular views.
Noon
- Try the famous black eggs at Owakudani and have lunch at a nearby restaurant.
- Enjoy a stroll through the beautiful gardens at Hakone Gora Park. Let the children try a crafting workshop.
Evening
- Check in at your onsen ryokan. For dinner, savor local delicacies.
It’s a good idea to budget about half a day for visiting the Hakone Ropeway and Owakudani. In particular, since the waiting time for the ropeway can change depending on how crowded it is, it is recommended to plan with plenty of time.
Hakone Gora Park is easily accessible from the ropeway, and you can spend a leisurely afternoon there. Then, you can arrive at your accommodation in the evening and relax in the onsen.
Day 2
Morning
- After a leisurely breakfast at the ryokan, depart.
- Enjoy art at The Hakone Open-Air Museum. Check out the exhibits for children too!
Noon
- Have lunch at a cafe near the museum.
- Board the Hakone Pirate Ship and enjoy the scenery of Lake Ashi.
Afternoon
- After a break at a nearby cafe, start your journey home, or if you have time, it’s okay to visit other tourist spots like Hakone Shrine.
It is recommended to visit the museum leisurely from the morning and have lunch near the museum to have plenty of time. Also, since the Hakone Pirate Ship can be affected by weather and operating schedules, it is safe to check in advance.
Be flexible in adjusting the afternoon activities according to the children’s stamina and the weather. This model course is a plan that allows you to leisurely enjoy Hakone’s nature, art, and onsen.
