Horaien Garden

Horaien Garden is a vast garden covering approximately 5,000 tsubo (about 16,000 square meters), originally landscaped in the early Taisho era by the founder of the long‑established Mikawaya Ryokan, whose history dates back to the Meiji period. The garden began with azaleas transplanted from Okubo in Tokyo and is now renowned as a famous azalea viewing spot, featuring around 40 varieties and 30,000 azalea bushes.
From late April to May, when the azaleas are in full bloom, vibrant shades of red, white, and pink spread across the hillside, attracting many visitors. Throughout the year, the garden also offers seasonal beauty such as cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in summer, and autumn foliage, making it a pleasant place for leisurely walks in any season. During the autumn months, Japanese maples and other trees turn brilliant shades of red, with beautiful scenery lasting into late fall.
The views from the lounge of the adjacent Mikawaya Ryokan are also highly regarded, allowing visitors to spend a peaceful moment surrounded by the quiet, nature‑rich atmosphere that Hakone is known for.
