The Hakone Open-Air Museum

The Hakone Open-Air Museum, opened in 1969, is Japan’s first full-scale outdoor art museum and one of the most popular Hakone sightseeing spots. Spread across a vast open-air garden, the museum features over 120 modern sculptures, allowing visitors to enjoy each artwork in harmony with Hakone’s seasonal natural beauty.

Inside the museum, the Picasso Pavilion showcases a collection of more than 300 works, including ceramics and paintings, offering insight into the artist’s diverse creative expressions. Another highlight is the stained-glass tower “Symphonic Sculpture”, where you can walk up a spiral staircase bathed in colorful light and enjoy a special panoramic view of Hakone’s mountains and outdoor artworks from the rooftop—an unforgettable, Instagram-worthy art experience.

The museum is also popular with families, thanks to the interactive children’s installation “Woods of Net” and a relaxing hot-spring foot bath, unique to Hakone’s natural environment. With its blend of art, nature, and family-friendly activities, the Hakone Open-Air Museum remains a must-visit art museum in Japan for travelers of all ages.
