Etiquette

Hakone is a place where you can enjoy beautiful nature and Japanese culture. To ensure everyone has a pleasant visit, it’s helpful to keep a few simple manners in mind.

Before entering a hot spring, be sure to wash your body thoroughly. Do not bring towels into the bath. Please note that some hot springs do not allow guests with tattoos. Also, refrain from taking photos or using smartphones inside the hot spring facilities.

When visiting a shrine or temple, bow lightly before passing through the torii gate or entrance. Walk along the sides of the path rather than the center. When taking photos, be careful not to disturb other visitors.

When using buses, trains, or the Romancecar in Hakone, please keep quiet so that everyone can have a comfortable ride. Avoid speaking loudly or blocking the aisles. Be especially careful when bringing large suitcases onto buses. You can also use luggage delivery services between stations and hotels.

To help preserve Hakone’s beautiful nature, always take your trash home or dispose of it in designated areas. When hiking or walking around, treat plants and animals with care and avoid damaging the natural environment.

Some areas allow eating while walking, while others do not. Please follow the rules of each shop. Many restaurants do not permit outside food or drinks, so be sure to respect their guidelines when dining.

Greeting people and saying “thank you” with a smile will make locals happy. When taking photos of others, be sure to ask for permission first. Even if you don’t speak Japanese, you can enjoy communicating through gestures or translation apps.
